John Papa will be showing Astoria using Silverlight 3 beta as the client.

ADO.NET Data Services (codenamed Astoria) exposes entity models through RESTful services. It can dramatically simplify the code required to expose business objects through web services and reduce a tremendous amount of code. This session will show how to expose entity models using ADO.NET Data Services, how to consume and save data, and how to debug the communications using various tools. When the technology does not quite do what you need out of the box, it also allows for customizations to create custom service operations, intercept queries, and enforce permissions. Attendees will walk away with an understanding of the capabilities of ADO.NET Data Services, how to use them with Silverlight, and when and where it is ideal to use in an application architecture and when there are better options.

Session 1 – jQuery with ASP.NET
- JQuery is an open source JavaScript library that has a passionate
following among Ajax developers. Microsoft is integrating the open
source JQuery library into both the ASP.NET Web Forms and ASP.NET MVC
frameworks and providing full product support. Learn how you can take
advantage of JQuery to build richly interactive client-side Ajax
applications when developing either ASP.NET Web Forms or ASP.NET MVC
applications. Also see how JQuery works in combination with ASP.NET
AJAX to provide the best framework for building Ajax applications.

Session 2 – Data Services - OnPremise and Off -
In the near future, applications will be developed using a combination
of custom application code and online building block services,
including data-centric services. In this session we discuss
advancements in the Microsoft development platform and online service
interfaces to enable seamless interaction with data services both
on-premises (e.g., ADO.NET Data Services Framework over on-premises SQL
Server) and in the cloud (e.g., SQL Server Data Services). Learn how
you can leverage existing know-how related to LINQ (Language Integrated
Query), data access APIs, data-binding, and more when building
applications using online data.

Session 3 – Architecting for the Cloud using Windows Azure
- This session provides a tour of the Windows Azure cloud computing
platform, an overview of its various components, and explains how these
fit together to provide best-of-cloud experiences. We will explore the
architecture that links many of the Microsoft .NET services and lets
ISVs and businesses deliver compelling solutions. Learn how to compose
these services with SQL Data Services to create applications in the
cloud and connect them with on-premise systems. We will also examine
the next generation of messaging, data, access control, and directory
services, and how they fit together to provide a seamless integration
into the cloud.

The INETA Community Champion Award

INETA Rewards those Active in the User Group Community

An XBox or MSDN Subscription to the 10 Most Active Contributors in the User Group Community each quarter.

How? By doing what you are doing already, you stand to win:

a) Valuable Prizes: An MSDN Subscription. And, if you already have one, you can choose an XBox instead.

XBox
MSDN Professional Subscription

b) The Fame and Prestige of having an award to hang on your wall that shows that INETA recognizes your contributions to the User Group Community.

c) Official Recognition on the INETA Website for one year.
All of your peers will be able to see that you stand out above the crowd. If the opportunity presents itself for you to show your dedication to the User Group Community in a public way, there is no better way than to show off your name highlighted on the website of a highly respected organization like INETA.
d) A Badge for your website showing that you are a Community Champion.
When folks visit your website, blog or any other place where you publicly post your work, they will see that you are a Community Champion.
Oooohhhh. Recognition by INETA? Valuable Prizes? An award to hang on my wall? A Badge? How can I participate?

Well, I am glad that you asked.

INETA has long been known for it's support of User Groups and this year, there are a number of great new programs supporting the User Group Community. The Community Champs program is one of them. INETA wants to recognize individuals who are demonstrating their involvement in the User Group community. The program is aimed at rewarding those that are the most active with the prizes and award mentioned above. It is INETA's way of recognizing the ones that really bring the community together. So, in short, if you are the kind of person who helps to run user group meetings, codecamps, or helps out in any number of other ways, you should let INETA know the kind of activities that you are involved in. If you are very active, you may be recognized by INETA in a very public and spectacular way for the activities that you currently do to help the user group community.

INETA and Community-Credit are making it happen.

Community Credit has been helping to recognize fellow developers for the past number of years for their accomplishments and INETA has been the mainstay of User Groups for many years, so it is no surprise that the two would be working together to make this great program possible. Best of all, the contributions that you record will also count toward Community Credit prizes, so you may even have a chance to be rewarded with a Geeky, Community Credit prize as an added bonus.

How do I submit my contributions?

Visit the INETA website and go to the Champions section, sign in and let INETA know what you are doing by recording your contributions. The current quarterly period counts for contributions during period of June 30th, 2007 to June 30th, 2008. The final submissions can be made until July 14th. Keep in mind that the end of this current quarter is coming up pretty soon, so if you have been very active over the last year, be sure to enter them soon so that you don't miss this great opportunity.

What are the benefits of participating?

If you are an individual who is always contributing to the User Group Community, you do it because you like it. You don't do it because you expect to be rewarded. At the same time, if you just happen to be rewarded and recognized then that makes it that much better. Imagine playing on an XBox that you received as a thanks for all of your hard work. It makes the games just a little bit more fun. Using your MSDN subscription that you "earned" makes the tools just a little bit better and seeing the award hanging on your wall is a reminder to you and your colleagues just how committed you are.

Can anybody participate?

Unfortunately, the current period (being our first) is for participants in North America only.

It's All About The Tools – (It’s AATT! ) Episode One!

When I was a youth, watching my Dad tune up our car… there was a spark plug way in the back and it was really tough to get at using a traditional socket wrench. Then he pulled out this special tool that had a bend in it for just such a situation. My Dad said… “When you have the right tool for the job, it makes it easy… without the right tool you will struggle and struggle”. How true is that? Sometimes as a developer we struggle, needlessly… if we only knew there was a tool that did a certain function. Many times I will see a tool and say “if I had only know about that I would have been done so much quicker”. Many times in an MSDN Event I will show a tool as part of a larger presentation topic and some folks will come up to me afterwards and say that was the best part because that tool solves a specific problem they had.
Did you ever feel inundated with developer tools? Did you ever feel you are missing something that could make your life easier as a developer and as a power user? There are so many tools available to choose from and it keeps getting tougher to keep up with. Tool familiarity continues to be one of the top developers challenges. This series of seminars is all about tools for developers, by developers.
Welcome to this new, fresh and original ground breaking MSDN seminar series from Russ’ Tool Shed called … It’s All About The Tools. This is the first installment of many more to come. This session is tech talk about tools for developers. Join Microsoft Florida Developer Evangelist Russ Fustino for his take on what's hot in the developer's toolbox. There's something here for everyone, from beginners to experts. Oh, by the way, you might want to put your hard hat on for this one!
Don’t miss this event. It’s where It’s AATT! J In this first session you will see demonstrations the following tools and a few more surprises… Fiddler Web Stress Tool IE Developer Toolbar Visual Studio IDE tools

Most applications of any scale need to make remote calls. Whether you need to call across processes from your smart client to a web service, from your web server to your application server, or from one client to another in a peer to peer fashion, WCF supports any kind of remote messaging or communications scenario. It doesn’t just stop at remote calls either, but also supports multiple forms of security, distributed transactions, queuing, concurrency, callbacks and many other things that are needed in full blown enterprise scale Service Oriented Architecture applications. This talk will show you the basics of using WCF to connect applications. You will learn what WCF is all about, how it relates to other remoting technologies, how to create a service, how to connect a client, and will expose you to the other many facets of WCF.

He is a frequent speaker at industry conferences worldwide including Microsoft TechEd US, Europe, and Malaysia, DevConnections, DevTeach, SDC Netherlands, .NET Days Denmark, and others. His last book, Data Binding in Windows Forms 2.0, came out in January 2006, and his latest book Smart Client Deployment with ClickOnce hit the shelves in January 2007. Brian also recently completed a LiveLessons training DVD named Developing Applications with Windows Workflow Foundation that will be out in the April 2007 timeframe. Brian got started programming as a hobby while flying F-14 Tomcat’s in the Navy, graduating from both TopGun and U.S. Naval Test Pilot School.

ScottGu at Space Coast .Net

Recently we had Scott Guthrie who works for Microsoft stop by and present at our meeting while he was in town for DevConnections . Scott runs the teams that build the .NET Common anguage Runtime (CLR), .NET Compact Framework, ASP.NET /Atlas, Windows Forms, Windows Presentation Foundation (aka "Avalon") , IIS 7.0, Commerce Server, Visual Web Developer, and Visual Studio Tools for Avalon (aka "Cider").

Scott did a really awsome 2 hour presentation. He started off showing the new CSS features of Visual Studio Orcas. Then he moved on to LINQ and showed some really useful examples. Then he moved on to WPF and did a demo on Expression blend. Finally he moved on to IIS 7 and showed how to configure the website settings in a config file.

Scott is a great presenter. I was really impressed with how much he was able to cover. I was also impressed with how stable Visual Studio Orcas was in this early CTP.
