John Papa coming to Space Coast .Net User Group

John Papa will be speaking about the Entity Framework at the Space Coast .Net User Group Feb 20,2008 meeting.

The ADO.NET Entity Framework, part of ADO.NET components of the .NET Framework, is an Object-Relational mapping technology from Microsoft. It is geared to solving the mismatch between the formats data is stored in a database and in which it is consumed in an object-oriented programming language or other front ends. ADO.NET Entity Framework will be released in the first half of 2008, separate from .NET Framework 3.5 and Visual Studio 2008.

John Papa, Senior Consultant for ASPSoft, Inc., a Microsoft MVP [C#], MCSD.NET, and an author of several XML, ADO and SQL books will be speaking. John has over 10 years experience in architecting and developing Microsoft technologies as a consultant and a trainer. He is the author of the Data Points column in MSDN Magazine and can often be found speaking at user groups, MSDN Web Casts, and industry conferences such as VSLive.John Papa, Senior Consultant for ASPSoft, Inc., a Microsoft MVP [C#], MCSD.NET, and an author of several XML, ADO and SQL books will be speaking.

It's All About The Tools – (It’s AATT! ) Episode One!

When I was a youth, watching my Dad tune up our car… there was a spark plug way in the back and it was really tough to get at using a traditional socket wrench. Then he pulled out this special tool that had a bend in it for just such a situation. My Dad said… “When you have the right tool for the job, it makes it easy… without the right tool you will struggle and struggle”. How true is that? Sometimes as a developer we struggle, needlessly… if we only knew there was a tool that did a certain function. Many times I will see a tool and say “if I had only know about that I would have been done so much quicker”. Many times in an MSDN Event I will show a tool as part of a larger presentation topic and some folks will come up to me afterwards and say that was the best part because that tool solves a specific problem they had.

There are so many tools available to choose from and it keeps getting tougher to keep up with. Tool familiarity continues to be one of the top developers challenges. Connecting Applications with WCF

Most applications of any scale need to make remote calls. Whether you need to call across processes from your smart client to a web service, from your web server to your application server, or from one client to another in a peer to peer fashion, WCF supports any kind of remote messaging or communications scenario. It doesn’t just stop at remote calls either, but also supports multiple forms of security, distributed transactions, queuing, concurrency, callbacks and many other things that are needed in full blown enterprise scale Service Oriented Architecture applications. This talk will show you the basics of using WCF to connect applications. You will learn what WCF is all about, how it relates to other remoting technologies, how to create a service, how to connect a client, and will expose you to the other many facets of WCF.

Bio:

Brian Noyes is a software architect with IDesign Inc (www.idesign.net), the Microsoft Regional Director for the Mid-Atlantic Region, a Solution Architect MVP, writer, speaker, and trainer. He is a frequent speaker at industry conferences worldwide including Microsoft TechEd US, Europe, and Malaysia, DevConnections, DevTeach, SDC Netherlands, .NET Days Denmark, and others. His last book, Data Binding in Windows Forms 2.0, came out in January 2006, and his latest book Smart Client Deployment with ClickOnce hit the shelves in January 2007. Brian also recently completed a LiveLessons training DVD named Developing Applications with Windows Workflow Foundation that will be out in the April 2007 timeframe. Brian got started programming as a hobby while flying F-14 Tomcat’s in the Navy, graduating from both TopGun and U.S. Naval Test Pilot School. He later turned his love of programming into his current career.

ScottGu at Space Coast .Net

Recently we had Scott Guthrie who works for Microsoft stop by and present at our meeting while he was in town for DevConnections . Scott runs the teams that build the .NET Common anguage Runtime (CLR), .NET Compact Framework, ASP.NET /Atlas, Windows Forms, Windows Presentation Foundation (aka "Avalon") , IIS 7.0, Commerce Server, Visual Web Developer, and Visual Studio Tools for Avalon (aka "Cider").

Scott did a really awsome 2 hour presentation. He started off showing the new CSS features of Visual Studio Orcas. Then he moved on to LINQ and showed some really useful examples. Then he moved on to WPF and did a demo on Expression blend. Finally he moved on to IIS 7 and showed how to configure the website settings in a config file.

Scott is a great presenter. I was really impressed with how much he was able to cover. I was also impressed with how stable Visual Studio Orcas was in this early CTP.
